We list everyone who has been buried at our cemetery in our database, our website, and on Find-a-Grave. We do not add anyone who is not buried here but still has a memorial marker on a space. A family member found his parents listed on Find-a-Grave, (we did not add them), but not on our website. They have one marker with both names of his parents. He wants us to add them to our online website. My opinion is they are not buried here so they should not be listed on our website as being buried here, his argument is that the space was paid for, they chose to only put a marker on it, but they should still be listed in our burial register.

So, what do you all do?

          Hi Jo Ellen,

We have this happen quite frequently here in Maine and at all three of my cemeteries, we do list them both in our paper records as well as our online records. We do, however, specify that is is a cenotaph and will reference where the body is actually interred.

As an example, a child was buried at the only Jewish cemetery in Maine. When the new cemetery was founded in 1894, the family purchased a family plot in the new cemetery and placed a memorial marker for the child buried at the other cemetery.

We list it as a courtesy and sign of respect for the family, as well as to help with the confusion of multiple online records.

          Hope this helps!
