A synagogue owning a section in a large cemetery association now realizes that allowing families to decline the purchase of perpetual care from the cemetery association has created a mixture of unkempt graves – for which p/c was not purchased – next to attractive ones that have been endowed via a one-time p/c purchase. Moving forward, the synagogue can require the purchase of p/c at time of need, but what actions can rectify the existing unkempt graves? If the synagogue pays to have these graves maintained, won’t the other families who paid for p/c feel this is unfair? Has anyone seen a good approach to this common problem?
