Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association in Houston, Texas is a separate legal entity, but we are affiliated with Congregation Beth Yeshurun which is a large Conservative congregation. Our accounting functions have always been handled by the synagogue staff. We are now considering setting up our own separate accounting function. The cemetery association is a small operation with two cemeteries, and two part time employees. We sell about 100 graves per year and have about 100 burials per year. We are considering using Quick Books. I would like to hear from anyone if you have any recommendations on accounting software for cemetery operations and whether you have had any experience, good or bad, with Quick Books online or the desktop version.

A few questions:
Are you classified as a 501(c) (13) and file a 990 each year? Are the employees currently paid by the cemetery or the synagogue? Will just one person be accessing the accounting software or do multiple people need to use it?
As an accountant, I normally set my clients up with Quickbooks and one of my cemeteries is set up with Quickbooks Desktop. The other cemetery is owned by a synagogue (Temple Beth El) and I use the synagogue software for that (a combination of Shulcloud and Sage 50). Several of my other jobs, I’ve set up Quickbooks Online because multiple people need to use it and it’s more convenient because it can be accessed from any computer.
If you can get verified with Techsoup as a non-profit, the costs for either choice are greatly discounted. The desktop version through TechSoup is s a one-time fee of around $78 (excluding payroll services if you need those) and you don’t pay anything else until you upgrade the software. The online version through TechSoup is a yearly fees of around $75 (excluding payroll services).
If you don’t qualify with Techsoup, the cost for the desktop version is between $550-$900 and the online version is a monthly fee (depending on what plan you choose) and is usually between $55-$100 per month (payroll services not included).
I can recommend both of them and both are user friendly.
